My Short Story Adventure

Hello lovely readers! I was just sitting here getting over the flu and thought I'd get a little work done. So, here's a bit from my writing life.

2018 has started out with some big goals. One of the big things I want to tackle this year are my short stories. I normally focus on my novels, but in between stories I work on shorts that don't normally ever see the light of day. Wanting to find a home for these lovelies I started looking around and found a website that not only offers a place to showcase my shorts, but it also pays a little bit for each read.

Penpee.com is a UK website that brings readers to authors. Short stories are featured on the site and readers "pay" 3 credits for each chapter of the story they read. Credits can be earned by logging in everyday and by inviting friends to join. 16 credits are also earned just for signing up.

Authors, you can sign up and post shot stories for readers to find. After signing up as a reader, authors can choose between three plans. Starter, Basic and Premium. As you can see from the image the Basic and Premium plans cost money. (Roughly $10 for the Premium) The nice things is this covers 6 months. The free choice, Starter allows you to only post one story a month and authors earn less per read.

For the first six months I gambled with $10 and gave it a try. The Premium plan allows me to submit as many stories as I want and I am able to qualify for the leaderboard bonuses. If it doesn't pay off I can let it expire and I'll end up with a Starter plan where I'll still earn at least a little bit for every read the stories get.

So, you might be asking how quality is controlled if authors can just post whatever they want. Well, that's answered with a rating system. I've pulled this from the sites "How it Works" page:

"We classify works based on standard and grammatical context. We will apply quality standard filter to every work from A, A+ to D. With an A+ rating indicating the top most level of professionalism and quality of the writer’s work. So if you are not comfortable reading works of a C or D rated writer, you can use the filter. We rate each story and not each writer."

And so you have it. Penpee.com seems to have their bases covered and I've given them a try.

http://penpee.com/short-story/a-lord-for-the-duchess/I've already posted a short story I've been holding onto for a while. A Lord for the Duchess, a sweet contemporary romance.

Simone Noir is a romance novelist who just wants to finish her latest story before her deadline is up. Her eccentric aunt, however, has other plans. Invited to a murder mystery weekend getaway, Simone learns that not everyone is who they seem to be.

This story is 5 chapters long, which can be covered by those 16 free credits you get for signing up ;).

So, this year I'm giving Penpee a try and I'll be adding short stories there and I'll be sharing them here and on my social networks, if I can remember to keep up with them. If you decide to give it a try feel free to friend me on the site and comment here and let me know how its going for you.

Peace and Love!

My Sexy Reunion

It's a My Sexy Saturday post! This weeks theme is My Sexy Reunion. Knowing that Julia and Edmond from Fire Hunt have a long history together I've pull a bit from their story to share with everyone.

 Fire Hunt snippet:

Instead of focusing the conversation on his failed escape, he halfheartedly pointed at a framed picture on the dresser. “So how do I get there?”

He knew without looking that Julia was aware of every detail in the photo. It highlighted an old tire swing rocking over a large creek. For him, and maybe still for her, it was home. “I want to go back there, when the Saving Grace Act was just a right wing movement. Back before hell broke loose. When we were just kids playing out in the woods.”

Julie sighed. “We can’t go back in time. All we can do is save the future.” She let her arms drop and strolled over to the bed. With a huff, she sat down and finally looked over at the picture. “I didn’t want to leave.”

“But you did leave, Jul. I had you just one night and then you were gone. Not a word, not even a clue, about your idiotic plans. I broke down and demanded your dad tell me.” It had taken everything he had to march up to his coven leader and demand to know where Julia had gone. The condescending answer he had gotten had sent Edmund off on his own.

She let out a small chuckle from her perch on the edge of the bed. “That couldn’t have been fun. He was mad as hell when I told him.”

Her father had been more than angry, but at the same time he was over the moon happy with pride for his daughter. “No. He was proud. You were going to fight a different battle for all of us. His daughter was going to start a change for the better, and I was going to leave you alone,” Edmund said.

A whisper of a smile graced her lips as she gave her head a little shake. “You never could have walked this path, Eddie. It’s not your way.”

That's it for this week! Remember to hop on over to the other great blogs on the list below.

Peace and Love!

Let's Roast Marshmallows

http://files.content.campnanowrimo.org/camp/files/2014/02/2014-Participant-Facebook-Cover.jpg

It's that time of year again. That's right Camp NaNoWriMo is here again. I'm not sure if I'll be able to attempt NaNoWriMo in November so I'm going to try for a camp out. Camp is a lot of like what happens in November, but there are a few differences. I get to choose a word goal instead of the standard 50k words in a month. Also I get to have a cabin filled with other writers.

This year I'm attempting to add 30k words to a story I've had setting to the side for a while. Back in 2012 I attempted to write this story at Camp NaNoWriMo, and I'm sad to say I only just reached 3k. Witch Hunt and Fox Hunt have dominated my mind for the last few years along with the random story, but I think I need to leave the witches and wolves behind for a month and work on something else.

Rip Tide is a sci-fi romance that feels like a great idea to me and hopefully I'll be able to get a lot more of it typed out this month. Here's a short blurb about the story:

On the run after a galactic war that tore the loyalties of mankind, Kara refuses to be used again. Separated from her ship and crew, she will use any means available to survive and avoid recapture.

In any case I'll be working on this in the coming weeks and we'll see where it goes.

As always happy reading and writing and good dreams.

Interrupting Dilly for Some One on One

Last week I interrupted Witch Hunt to pull Mike aside and ask him a few questions about his thoughts on true mates and the relationship between his friends, Rei and Aidan. After doing that fun post for Romance & Beyond I started wondering what Dilly might think of true mates and the danger that werewolves face as they live their lives.

Ive pulled Dilly aside just before the start of Fox Hunt. She has just arrived at her seasonal job where she is the winter time caretaker for a summer camp. So how about we get this ball rolling.

Dilly, are you concerned about finding your mate?

Ive got plenty of time before I need to start thinking about that and Im sure when I do start to think about it my mate will find me with no problems. After all, at least one male shows up a year trying to court Lizzy or me.

Does that mean youre not ready for your mate to find you?

Of course not. Itll be years before I need to worry about that. Besides, Lizzy is the oldest. Im sure shell be moving off with a mate long before I do.

If you were to find your mate soon, what do you think he would be like?

Well, if he was my mate hed have to be willing to stay near my family. I dont want to leave them unless I have to. He would also need to be willing to let me do what I do. Im not just going to sit at home and be a little housewife. I want to work and support myself.

So you want to stay close to your family? Wouldnt that make it easier for the burners to find you?

I dont think those idiots could find much of anything. You hardly hear about them capturing anyone these days. I dont think my family is in any real danger as long as we keep moving. Its when you stop moving that youre in trouble.

Does that mean your mate will have to move with you? What if he has a pack somewhere else he wants to stay with?

Typically males leave their pack when they find their mates, unless theyre the alpha, but I dont think an unmated male is going to be in charge of his family. I dont want a man who has too much control anyway. Alphas like to control everything.

Is there any one way you think a mate shouldnt act?

He shouldnt think he has to protect me all the time. Im a big girl. I can take care of myself. If thats everything Ive got a lot of work to get started.

Well, I think that concludes our interview with Dilly. Shes in for a bit of a surprise when Mike shows up just in time to help save the day. Lots of luck, Dilly and well be seeing you before too long.

I Dub Thee ... Saving Grace Saga

I've finally come to terms with the fact that I should have put a name to the stories that occur in the world in which Witch Hunt and Fox Hunt take place. I have a third story in the works and I suppose I should let the cat out of the bag on what I've been calling these stories. Therefor I dub thee the Saving Grace Saga.

The Saving Grace Saga is a set of three novels and what will mostly become unpublished short stories that hide away in my desk drawer. Witch Hunt and Fox Hunt are the first two novels in the set and a third is still being written.

I was reluctant to use this name for the stories because I wasn't sure if the second novel would be published. If Fox Hunt had gone no where I would have had Witch Hunt stand on its own, but Fox Hunt is scheduled to be released in June. So be on the look out over the next month or so for news able Fox Hunt and a giveaway or two to celebrate its upcoming release.

As always good dreams and happy reading.

Musing Wolves

Remember this peeping wolf? If you follow my Hunter or Hunted Facebook page I'm sure you might. You may have even seen my Peek a Boo post here. For me this image inspired a big chunk of my soon to be published novel, Fox Hunt.

Fox Hunt was accepted for publication by Cobblestone Press at the end of March and is moving head first into the editing process this month. It is the second book in what I hope will be a three book set centered around a supernatural world that I created originally for Witch Hunt. In this world witches and werewolves are hunted by a Federal Government agency, known as Witch Hunters or the burners. While Witch Hunt dealt with both a witch and a werewolf, Fox Hunt revolves around werewolves and their struggle in the alternate America.

When I saw the picture above my main character, Mike, came to mind and I would often look at the image when I was having issues developing Mike past some catch in his personality. With the upcoming book I'm happy that Mike along with his counterpart, Dilly, will be enjoyed by others.

With any luck I'll have a cover to reveal by late May and a set release date for all of those interested in finding out more about peek a boo wolves.

Happy reading and as always good dreams.

Legend of the Highland Dragon by Isabel Cooper

For my first book in the 2014 Shifter Challenge hosted by Parajunkee I read Legend of the Highland Dragon by Isabel Cooper. When I found this book I was excited because I love dragons and the idea of a shifter being able to transform into a dragon is awesome.

Legend of the Highland Dragon (Highland Dragon, #1)Taking place in the late 18th century, the story revolves around Mina, a young independent woman working as a secretary in London, and Stephen, a centuries old shape shifter. The two are thrown together when an old enemy surfaces. Mina is working for a scholar in is older years when Stephen first meets her. Stephen begins to call her Cerberus due to her fierce manner in following her employer's orders.

Soon Mina is drug into the occult underground while trying to protect her employer. This leads to Stephen's secret being relieved and the need to keep Mina close at hand. Stephen offers to employ Mina himself to keep her safe from the evil magician that is looking for Stephen's secret.

My thoughts on the book:

The story is well written and drifts more towards a detective style apposed to the romantic style most romance readers are used to. The romance adds a little extra flavor to the story and makes you want to cheer for Mina. Stephen has an air of mystery around him that I don't think is explained very well. Mina finds the answers to these secrets pretty easy and kind of left me wanting to know more about the detective side of the story.

As Stephen searches for the magician he is taken into the back rooms and dark roads of London. He takes Mina with him from time to time when he cannot do something alone. I was really drawn in by the clue hunting and smoky backrooms that created this mystery.

With all that being said, I have to add that this really isn't a book that can be judged by it's cover. Instead of a robust, sword wielding Scottish dragon, I found a gentleman who is by far more capable within the realm of magic. I'm sure Stephen can wield a sword, but I would have loved to have seen it. All in all Legend of the Highland Dragon is a great read for anyone interested in detective stories set in late 18th century London that has a flare of paranormal fun.

Second Life Book Store

Witch Hunt has made it to the shelves. While the paranormal romance has long been distributed through Amazon, Barns&Noble, All Romance EBooks and Cobblestone, now it is on a real shelf. Well, sorta. It is currently resting on a shelf in this virtual book store located in Second Life.

This store is run by author Sharon Clare and the sign above the door reads "Welcome to Temptation." I love the idea of having a book store set up in a game. While I thought just having an ebook was a little techish, this takes me into a cyber trip. Sharon places books on her shelves along with a buy link and a blurb. It also rotates through on the store window, as you can see in the picture.

Here's the fun part. I'm hosting my first contest. The first person to locate the bookstore and post a screen shot of Witch Hunt on the shelf wins a free copy of Witch Hunt for their Kindle bookshelf!

Here's the rules: You must be over 18 and the screen shot should clearly show Witch Hunt. The first screen shot posted on my Facebook page, Hunter or Hunted, wins. This contest will run until someone claims the free copy.

Happy hunting all!

Life is a Little Crazy

Crazy, like leaving me standing alone with an armful of colorful stuff. Crazy, like falling back onto a mountain of blankets and pillows laughing for no reason. Life is a little crazy, but that's why we love it so much. I've been a bit blocked lately and so I started thinking about all the other projects I've got sitting on the sidelines, waiting for me to get to them. I have to admit, those poor stories have been neglected lately. So I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to set some time aside just for those wacky fun little short stories.

Here's a touch of what I've got going on in the short story department:

West Lakes: Stories of Chaos
This set of short stories combine to make up the story of West Lakes and it's Earth Angel. Each short deals with something that has happen to either the Earth Angel or someone who affects the way things are run in West Lakes' supernatural society. Most of the residents are normal humans, but a few handfuls of people are supernatural; whether they are demigods, servants of gods or just pure supernatural beings like elves. This is a project I have been working on for years, but have very little honestly written out.

Sci Fi
I have several sci fi shorts that I want to get onto paper. Each story is a story about side characters in a novel I have on the back burner. The goal for these was to inspire a little more work on the main story itself and to gain interest from readers. In these stories we have clones, bio androids, one sleep deprived ship captain and one great fire fight that I'm hoping rivals the OK Coral.

Well, those are the two project shorts I plan on devoting a little more time to. With my main novel on the table right now it can be hard to find time for these and my more traditional writing work, but what makes life more crazy than a little challenge?

Peace and love my faithful readers.
