My Sexy Shifter

It's another My Sexy Saturday and this week's theme is My Sexy Shifter. It just screamed show some fur and with that thought in mind I'm sharing a scene from Witch Hunt. Rei, a witch with the power to transform, has run into a pack of werewolves, but one wolf has the power to flip her world upside down. Enjoy!

Witch Hunt snippet:

Aidan rolled over onto his side to face her, propping his head up on his hand. “Show me,” he challenged. He had only seen the transformation of his own kind, and the idea of seeing Rei as a wolf was exciting and new. Seeing Rei’s look of confusion, Aidan said, “Show me your wolf form. Let me hear her howl.”

Rei slowly lifted herself up from the chair. “I don’t know how long I can hold the form,” she admitted quietly. Aidan did not say anything, only watched her intently. He felt the tickling of magic as Rei called it to her. Her eyes drifted closed, and Aidan wondered if she was picturing the white wolf.

Aidan watched mystified as Rei’s clothes melted away, and fur began to blossom in their place. Her face became thinner, longer, and was quickly covered in short fur. When Rei dropped to her hands and knees in the middle of the room, Aidan sat up to watch her more closely.

What Aidan saw sitting there before him was a very powerful, fullgrown female timber wolf. She was smaller than his kind but was large for her kind, appearing well over a hundred pounds. Then there were her eyes. Those deep, engulfing black eyes stared at him confidently.

Aidan slipped his feet off the edge of the couch, sitting up. Remembering how his own kind reacted in their furry form, Aidan gently moved his hand, fingers outstretched, toward her. Rei leaned forward and bumped his palm with her muzzle. “You’re really coherent right now,” Aidan said in amazement. Rei let out a little whine. A smile drifted over Aidan’s lips, and he quickly amended what he had said. “It’s rare for a werewolf to be so coherent at such an early age. I assumed you’d be the same.”

Rei stood up and, showing just how coherent she was, began to spin in a slow circle. Aidan recognized the movement at once. Rei was showing off her appearance for him, asking if he liked what he saw. He was captivated by the sleek look her light-colored fur gave her. Her movements were so graceful and natural. Aidan felt his own wolf stirring and knew that his furrier half liked the image of Rei’s wolf form too.

“You are gorgeous,” he said finally. Rei stopped her spin and faced him again. Her head was held high with pride from his praise. “Let me hear you. I want to know what you sound like.”

When he saw her standing down there with her pale skin glowing in the firelight, he had decided to settle in and watch for a while before interrupting. She was a rare creature of beauty standing boldly in nothing but the gifts nature had given her. She looked like a golden goddess praying to the stars. Staring down from a low-lying ridge, Aidan, in his shape as a large gray wolf, watched her stretch up from her toes all the way to her fingertips. He lay on his stomach, front paws folded under his muzzle. Her short dark hair drifted lazily in the cool breeze. The firelight caught teasing hints of scarlet highlights in her hair, creating a glowing halo around her face. He was just starting to admire her full, perky breasts and lovely flat stomach when a surge of energy shot through his body like a shock.

"She felt so warm and inviting under him. Aidan had never known a woman who could make him want her so much. Rei was practically quivering beneath him, and he felt a bristle of pride that she would only ever feel it for him. Aidan felt Rei’s fingers drag down his back and grip his butt in a tight hold. He was about to adjust their position so that he could bury himself into her when an odd sound reached his ears.

Aidan stiffened above Rei and lifted up from her neck. The sound of a car door slamming closed outside made his eyes shift to the bedroom door."

My Sexy Saturdeay : A Sexy First

It's that time again. I try to do one of these at least once a month, because they're just so much fun. This My Sexy Saturday theme is A Sexy First. I've chosen seven sexy sentences from the first face to face meeting between Rei and Aidan from my first novel, Witch Hunt, for this one. Witch Hunt Except:


When he found her scent again, he burst forward, slamming through the underbrush and found his wolf self thrust directly in her path.
 

Standing in front of her, Aidan felt a need to relieve some of her fear. He felt the wolf withdrawal as he transformed back into his human self. Once he was human again, he had been about to speak when he was suddenly captivated by the sight of her. Kneeling in front of him, he saw a young woman now filled with shock more than fear.

As Aidan had just begun admiring the bright moonglow of her skin, the Wild Hunt had chased her down and slammed into her. Wild energy ricocheted itself throughout her entire body and drove her down to one knee.

Halloween With The Boys

To celebrate Samhain in a special way I decided to sit down with the boys from the Saving Grace Saga and ask them a few question about Halloween. Tonight we have Aidan and Mike. Our third gust hasn’t shown up yet, but maybe he’ll be in a little later.

Mike and Aidan are relaxed on the couch with a couple of beers enjoying some friendly banter when I interrupt them. “Okay fellas, what’s your favorite thing about Halloween?”

With a laugh Mike answers “The tricks. Dilly and I always get into a prank war this time of year.”

Aidan speaks up, “This time of year? You two are always going at it.” He turns to look at me and goes on, “I found a fake spider in a pot of chili last spring. Dilly figured Mike would the first one to dig in.”

“Really? A fake spider? Anyway, what’s your favorite thing about Halloween, Aidan?”

“I love the scary movies,” he answers with a grin. “The really scary parts make Rei jump right into my lap.”

I can’t help but laugh at this a bit as I ask the next question. “So what costume would you guys pick out for your ladies if you had the choice?”

Aidan’s the first to answer. “Easy. Little Red Riding Hood.” He tips his beer towards Mike and adds, “I could chase her through the forest to Grandma’s any night.”

Mike bursts out with his own laugh and answers, “I had an idea, but I like his better.”

Just as I’m about to ask the final question the door bursts open and a tall, lean man rushes in. He closes the door quickly behind him and he appears to be out of breath. “Edmund! Glad you could join us just in time for the last question.”

Edmund struts over to an empty chair and flops down. He takes the beer Mike is offering and tips it towards me, signaling he’s ready. “Alright guys, finally what scares you the most?”

Mike and Aidan both look a little taken aback by the question. Finally Mike says, “Loosing Dilly.”

Aidan nods in agreement and answers, “I don’t know what I’d do if something happened to Rei or our Aiyana.”

I look over to Edmund who is drinking his beer rather quickly. “Our readers want to know, Edmund.”

He holds up his finger as he finishes the beer and lets out a satisfied sigh. “My greatest fear?” There’s a loud bang on the door behind him and he turns quickly before jumping from his seat. “That she’s going to catch me,” he answers, running across the room towards the other exit.

The two hunks on the couch and I watch as one door slams open and Edmund escapes through the second. A pretty blonde races through the room, ignoring us completely.

Book Trailer Madness

So I decided over the weekend that I would take the plunge and create a book trailer for Witch Hunt. This was something I had been thinking about doing for a while and I'm happy to say that considering I did it myself I like it. It was also within my budget. For any writer finding money to add to the budget can be hard. I used mostly free stock footage, images and music for this video, and along with Windows Movie Maker it was complete within a day.

I used a haiku that I wrote to help market the book for the text and the desktop image the art department at Cobblestone Press provided me. I've also been working on a trailer for Fox Hunt and with any luck I'll be able to share it also.

Interrupting Dilly for Some One on One

Last week I interrupted Witch Hunt to pull Mike aside and ask him a few questions about his thoughts on true mates and the relationship between his friends, Rei and Aidan. After doing that fun post for Romance & Beyond I started wondering what Dilly might think of true mates and the danger that werewolves face as they live their lives.

I’ve pulled Dilly aside just before the start of Fox Hunt. She has just arrived at her seasonal job where she is the winter time caretaker for a summer camp. So how about we get this ball rolling.

     Dilly, are you concerned about finding your mate?

I’ve got plenty of time before I need to start thinking about that and I’m sure when I do start to think about it my mate will find me with no problems. After all, at least one male shows up a year trying to court Lizzy or me. 

     Does that mean you’re not ready for your mate to find you?

Of course not. It’ll be years before I need to worry about that. Besides, Lizzy is the oldest. I’m sure she’ll be moving off with a mate long before I do.

     If you were to find your mate soon, what do you think he would be like?

Well, if he was my mate he’d have to be willing to stay near my family. I don’t want to leave them unless I have to. He would also need to be willing to let me do what I do. I’m not just going to sit at home and be a little housewife. I want to work and support myself.

     So you want to stay close to your family? Wouldn’t that make it easier for the burners to find you?

I don’t think those idiots could find much of anything. You hardly hear about them capturing anyone these days. I don’t think my family is in any real danger as long as we keep moving. It’s when you stop moving that you’re in trouble. 

 

     Does that mean your mate will have to move with you? What if he has a pack somewhere else he wants to stay with?

Typically males leave their pack when they find their mates, unless they’re the alpha, but I don’t think an unmated male is going to be in charge of his family. I don’t want a man who has too much control anyway. Alphas like to control everything.

     Is there any one way you think a mate shouldn’t act?

He shouldn’t think he has to protect me all the time. I’m a big girl. I can take care of myself. If that’s everything I’ve got a lot of work to get started.

Well, I think that concludes our interview with Dilly. She’s in for a bit of a surprise when Mike shows up just in time to help save the day. Lots of luck, Dilly and we’ll be seeing you before too long.

I Dub Thee ... Saving Grace Saga

I've finally come to terms with the fact that I should have put a name to the stories that occur in the world in which Witch Hunt and Fox Hunt take place. I have a third story in the works and I suppose I should let the cat out of the bag on what I've been calling these stories. Therefor I dub thee the Saving Grace Saga.

The Saving Grace Saga is a set of three novels and what will mostly become unpublished short stories that hide away in my desk drawer. Witch Hunt and Fox Hunt are the first two novels in the set and a third is still being written.

I was reluctant to use this name for the stories because I wasn't sure if the second novel would be published. If Fox Hunt had gone no where I would have had Witch Hunt stand on its own, but Fox Hunt is scheduled to be released in June. So be on the look out over the next month or so for news able Fox Hunt and a giveaway or two to celebrate its upcoming release.

Musing Wolves

Remember this peeping wolf? If you follow my Hunter or Hunted Facebook page I'm sure you might. You may have even seen my Peek a Boo post here. For me this image inspired a big chunk of my soon to be published novel, Fox Hunt.

Fox Hunt was accepted for publication by Cobblestone Press at the end of March and is moving head first into the editing process this month. It is the second book in what I hope will be a three book set centered around a supernatural world that I created originally for Witch Hunt. In this world witches and werewolves are hunted by a Federal Government agency, known as Witch Hunters or the burners. While Witch Hunt dealt with both a witch and a werewolf, Fox Hunt revolves around werewolves and their struggle in the alternate America.

When I saw the picture above my main character, Mike, came to mind and I would often look at the image when I was having issues developing Mike past some catch in his personality. With the upcoming book I'm happy that Mike along with his counterpart, Dilly, will be enjoyed by others.

With any luck I'll have a cover to reveal by late May and a set release date for all of those interested in finding out more about peek a boo wolves.

New Moon Madness

I've been hard at work revising my latest novel. Revising is a long process for me. Not as long as writing, but it seems that time just drags by while revising. I'm a few chapters away from this last read through, but when I'm not working on this piece another piece is peeking through already, and it seems this crazy new moon is only helping increase my interest in the story.

I love writing paranormal, fantasy and science fiction pieces. I fell in love with the thrill that creating the worlds gives me. Over the last few years paranormal fiction has taken over and I focused on werewolves and witches more than anything. In Witch Hunt Rei is a powerful Earth Witch who runs into a pack of werewolves in Montana. I have a healer in this latest story which is tied to the Witch Hunt world, and a third story idea centered around just the witch culture of the same world.

It may have been the idea of these witches that started to inspire a short story idea for me. A world were werewolves, vampires and other supernatural beasties are not as common in the story line. This story is based around two historically powerful families. Each family passes along their magical power to the next head of the family, and of course the families don't get along so well.

I'm not sure yet where this story is heading but this new moon tonight is pulling me towards starting some sort of outline for the story. If I do get an outline done I'm going to set it aside until I've finished those last few chapters of revision.

Second Life Book Store

Witch Hunt has made it to the shelves. While the paranormal romance has long been distributed through Amazon, Barns&Noble, All Romance EBooks and Cobblestone, now it is on a real shelf. Well, sorta. It is currently resting on a shelf in this virtual book store located in Second Life.

This store is run by author Sharon Clare and the sign above the door reads "Welcome to Temptation." I love the idea of having a book store set up in a game. While I thought just having an ebook was a little techish, this takes me into a cyber trip. Sharon places books on her shelves along with a buy link and a blurb. It also rotates through on the store window, as you can see in the picture. 

Here's the fun part. I'm hosting my first contest. The first person to locate the bookstore and post a screen shot of Witch Hunt on the shelf wins a free copy of Witch Hunt for their Kindle bookshelf!

Here's the rules: You must be over 18 and the screen shot should clearly show Witch Hunt. The first screen shot posted on my Facebook page, Hunter or Hunted, wins. This contest will run until someone claims the free copy.

Peek a Boo

I've been working on a novel. Well, I've been working on a lot of stories, but for the last half a year one novel has kept my attention more than the others. Another werewolf novel. It is centered around a character from my first novel, Witch Hunt. In this novel I've moved away from the mountains of Montana towards my home turf, the Appalachians. Yeap, I love the mountains and I think most of the stories that come to me for the shifters and witches are most likely to take place in them.

Onward to the story at hand. A romance centered around two werewolves. One is the leader of his bloodline and the other is the daughter in a traveling family. Traveling werewolf families live the way that werewolves lived for years. They travel from area to area, migrating if you will. This would keep them safe and relatively unnoticed by most people. After the Witch Hunters, aka burners, began to hunt down true witches and werewolves most of these families had to change their way of life, but as I learned in this story not all families felt it was the right move.


I won't lie, when I was writing Witch Hunt the character I'm working with now just screamed that he needed his own story. Even then I was developing him into more than a side character. The picture above, I also posted it in Hunter or Hunted Facebook page, was a strong inspiration for his peek a boo appearance in the life of our heroine. Other than mischievous wolf/man, I'm not sure why this picture caught my attention, but it sure did and now I'm riding a run away train towards ... well I guess I'll find out when I get there!

Now, back to the craziness of the day.

Prologue

High above the ground of man, the moonless night sky was calm. Bright stars dotted the darkness, and peace had settled. Suddenly a scream shattered the silence, and startled birds flew from the trees. The scream had rung out from a young woman far below, standing by a large flickering fire. As quickly as the scream had burst to life, a swift hand struck the woman across the face.

Rei fell to the ground, her voice silenced. The coppery taste of blood filled her mouth, and her world blurred over. As her eyes began to focus, Rei saw her brother only a few feet away. Blood rushed from his throat, and Rei, with her hands bound behind her back, could do nothing but watch. She could barely even make out the voices chanting around them.

The dark-clothed man who had hit her put his hands high in the air, mirroring a woman who held a bloody knife above her head. Rei ignored their ritual and struggled to her brother’s side. Leaning her forehead to the top of his, Rei whispered, “Richard, I’m sorry.” Tears streamed down her face as she felt her brother’s life force racing from his body.

Surrounding them, a dozen people called to the natural power in Richard’s blood. They pulled it from every drop, and the High Priestess who held the knife was funneling most of it into herself. Rei looked up at them and then back to her brother. Richard’s dark blue eyes found hers, and suddenly an image of a feather fluttered through her mind. In that instant Rei knew what she had to do. She felt the magic forming in the circle growing and knew that once they were finished with Richard they would turn to her. For Rei, death was one thing, but being killed to increase the power of a blood cult was beyond reasonable.

 

Rei needed no words to steal her brother’s magic back from the air, but her heart ached at the sin. Closing off the guilt, she began to reach out her magic. The blood that had swelled at her busted lip was enough. Blood called to blood, and Rei simply called out to the power of her brother. For an instant a battle between the will of the coven and Rei raged, but the love of her brother and the guilt of his death won. Rei’s head snapped back, and she stared blindly at the star-speckled sky. Behind her the High Priestess dropped her arms, breaking off the war of magic and dashed toward Rei, ready to drive the knife into her.

Time slowed as Rei began to stand. Her knees began to unbend and change. She felt the texture of her legs begin to roughen, and in the flicker of the fire, feathers began to ripple over her skin and clothing. As her arms shrank and formed hollowed-bone wings, the rope around her wrists fell to the ground. When time returned to normal, Rei was a small bird flying upward into the sky. Below her, the knife the High Priestess wielded stabbed into a small pile of cast off rope.

Rei heard a rage-filled scream from below her and then the stern command from the High Priestess, “Spread out! She can’t stay in that form long!”

High above the coven, the feathered Rei skimmed across the once again silent and still night. She felt fear gripping at her throat, threatening to weaken the power her brother had given her. Rei swallowed back her grief and flew onward.

Below her she knew the coven was scattering through the forest in their search. Rei was happy that the coven had not stolen the ability to change their shape. Shape changing was a rare gift for a witch. It may have been the only advantage she held over them, but holding a different form was hard. Speeding her way over the trees, Rei tried to focus on the image of the bird she had formed. She forced her will into the shape and prayed she could hold it long enough to put many miles between herself and the blood witches.

Thoughts of her beloved brother filled her mind, and it was only the determination of his power that had forced the image of the small bird into her mind. Quickly the face of her brother was morphing into the bird to help her hold the form long enough to escape. Richard, I’m so sorry, Rei whispered in her mind.

 

Settling In

Country Drive

 A few months ago my family moved into a new house. I love the drive to the house. Even though we moved into town we have a house set back that still has that country feel. Its great! Trash pickup with privacy.

The move came on suddenly and in the middle of it all I was busy editing and releasing my novel, Witch Hunt. I also had to put off a personal project, West Lakes, to get everything in order. Moving is tough, as I'm sure everyone knows. my real problem is getting back into the swing of things.

I still have a few boxes that are packed up and stuffed away in closets or the corner of my mini library. (aka a tall book shelf next to my bed) I doubt those are going to be unpacked anytime soon. My daughter's room is finally all put together though. She even has her own book shelf now! The rest of the set up and settling in is finished too.

Getting back into the swing of writing is a little hard though. I am even pretty far behind in my CampNaNoWriMo word count. Normally I pour myself into the challenge, but this time I find myself stuck with serious writers block. I've poured over old ideas. Tried taking a few days away from it. I even tried just writing something completely new. It's not working too well. I've also found that West Lakes is suffering. My July release hasn't been coming along at all. I just don't feel the spark yet.

A new house is wonderful. Settling in is fun, but it will disrupt your routine. Because of the move I was unable to plant a garden this year, but I think I may take up a few landscaping projects until the creative flow returns.

Witch Hunt : The Publishing Process

So I thought I would add the cover of Witch Hunt. I personally really like this cover. I was a little worried because I only filled out a form for this and didn't get to preview it before publishing, but I had nothing to worry about. It came out great! At least I think so. 

As Witch Hunt was my first professional published novel, I didn't know much about the entire process. Like many authors I feared the editing process. We've all heard the horror stories, but editing was a real dream for me. Waiting on the release turned out to be the hardest part.

Now to focus on promotion and spreading the word. By the by, if you're interested you can find Witch Hunt for sale @ Cobblestone Press. You can also read an except from the beginning of the story.
